A design of Linux based ZigBee and Bluetooth low energy wireless gateway for remote parameter monitoring

A design of Linux based ZigBee and Bluetooth low energy wireless gateway for remote parameter monitoring Being popular and predominant protocols in short range wireless communication, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE/Bluetooth Smart) and ZigBee are mostly used in Internet of things and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Simplest way to communicate with these protocols over the internet is to use a Gateway. This paper proposes a design of gateway to communicate with both protocols using a single gateway. This design reduces the cost of using separate gateways for individual protocol. The BLE radio module is embedded on the gateway for all Bluetooth enabled sensors. Two radio modules of ZigBee are embedded at the gateway, one for data collected at intervals and another for streaming data. Scheduling is done with the help of a Linux kernel. This design furnishes advantages of both the protocols and also increases the data transmission rate of ZigBee with reduced latency. SSL and DTLS connections are used for added security.
