Circuit simulation in a research oriented education of power electronics

Circuit simulation in a research oriented education of power electronics The Chair for Power Electronics is responsible for the education of all students of electrical engineering and mechatronics of the University of Magdeburg in the field of power electronics. Starting in 2005, a basic modernization concerning both contents and methods of education has started. From 2007, the educational system in electrical engineering has been changed to the bachelor and master degrees system. The use of computers in lessons, seminars and laboratory exercises became essential for a modernized education. Circuit simulation helps to increase clarity and understanding of complex operation principles of power electronics and gives an excellent preparation for the industrial practice of the students. The main aspects of motivation, the basic concept and the first steps of integration in an e-learning environment and finally some examples of the use of simulation for teaching powerelectronics will be presented and experiences will be discussed.
